A Guide to the Types of Industrial Valves
A valve is a flow-control device fitted to pipework that regulates the flow of water or gas by opening, closing or obstructing the passage. In this article, Sunnyvalves explains the types of valves and how they are used, helping you understand the different valve types and choose the valve you need.
Gate valve
The gate valve is one of the most widely used valves and has a handwheel for opening; it can be driven by air power, an electric motor or a piston actuator. The valve is fully open when the gate is lifted clear of the flow. Gate valves are designed to fully open or fully close the flow path, and come in several designs made from a solid wedge, flexible wedge, split wedge or parallel disk.
Globe valve
Globe valves are designed to regulate flow rate. They have a ring-shaped seat inside and are controlled by changing the position of a movable plug; pointing it left, opposite or at an angle lets the fluid flow out and helps prevent clogging and corrosion. There are three globe-valve designs — Z-body, Y-body and angle — three different disk arrangements.
Needle valve
The needle valve regulates flow rate in the same way as a globe valve. Needle valves are used where very fine flow control is needed, and are sometimes used as a component within other valves, because the needle gives precise control. Needle valves are most often found in car engines and central-heating systems.
Butterfly valve
The butterfly valve is a simple industrial valve designed to control flow, with limited control capability. It works by turning the handle 90 degrees; the flow-control element sits on a vertical or horizontal axis, opening when the handle is turned 90 degrees and closing when turned back.
Check valve A check valve, also known as a non-return valve, is an industrial valve used to set pressure limits and the amount of pressure in a system. Check valves are used in gate-valve systems because pressure passes through the whole valve. A check valve is flow-sensitive and relies on fluid flow to open or close: fluid pressure through the system opens the valve, while the weight of the valve closes it automatically as pressure drops, sealing fully when flow reaches zero. These valves prevent backflow in piping systems.
