Industrial Valves: Functions, Control Methods, and Tips for Choosing the Right Valve for Your Business

Valves are devices that control flow and pressure within a system or process. They are an essential part of the piping systems for the liquids and gases used in many commercial-industrial and residential applications. Valves can stop and start, or reduce and increase flow, control the direction of flow, and regulate flow or pressure within a process. They come in various shapes and sizes, and the best choice depends on what they will control.

There are many valve designs for different industrial uses, and the flow-control mechanism can depend on the valve's application. Generally there are two main ways to control the flow through a valve. All valves share the following basic components: the valve body, the bonnet, the valve actuator and the seat ring.

The valve body, or shell, is the main pressure-containing part of the valve and serves as its principal element, since it is the frame that holds all the parts together. Its ends connect to the piping or equipment in the system by threads, flanges or welded sockets.

The bonnet is cast or covered with the same material as the valve body and is fastened by a threaded joint or a weld. It can also support the internal valve parts.

The disk controls the fluid depending on its position. The full system pressure is applied to the disk, so the disk is the pressure-related component.

The seal ring provides a surface for the disk. One position is upstream and the other is downstream.

Choosing the best valve depends on what you need to control in your system in order to reduce leaks that can cause losses. Viscosity plays an important role in determining which valve you should use; high-pressure gas is also difficult to seal.

You should consider the temperature of the fluid that will pass through the system. Some gases and liquids expand or contract at different temperatures, and taking these facts and figures into account is helpful when choosing an industrial valve.

An excellent valve will only stay good for a certain period. However, if you know how to maintain it, it can give you excellent performance for a time, after which it follows its service life. You should choose valves that are certified and meet current standard codes. It is also important to check the valve's supplier.

Choosing an industrial valve is one of the most important decisions you make for a perfectly functioning system. You need perfect components, or a good enough overall system quality.
